What is Virtual Dentistry?

Particularly with the dangers of COVID-19, virtual appointments have become more popular. This is true even with dentistry. Virtual dentistry carries many benefits, even when we’re not experiencing a pandemic. Dr. Raymond Ribitch of Mid Michigan Smiles, a dentist in Mt. Pleasant, MI, explains what virtual dentistry is and who it can benefit.

What is Virtual Dentistry?

Virtual dentistry, also called teledentistry, allows you to have a dental checkup from the comfort of your own home. It’s similar to having a FaceTime video call, but it’s secure and meets all HIPAA requirements. You can ask Dr. Ribitch questions, get a second opinion about treatment, or have him take a look at any dental concerns you may have. At our office, we provide virtual dentistry through doxy.me.

About Doxy.me

Doxy.me is a secure software that allows you to speak freely with your dentist. You don’t have to make an account to use this software and it’s all HIPAA-compliant. None of your data is saved and your video connection with Dr. Ribitch is encrypted. The software is free to use, but your dentist will charge a fee for their services. This can be submitted to your insurance, as many cover virtual visits, particularly with the pandemic.

Who is Virtual Dentistry For?

Virtual dentistry can be for everyone. In particular, right now it’s a good option for people that have a compromised immune system and should avoid public places with the pandemic. This is also true for someone that has an immunocompromised person they live with or see regularly. But virtual dentistry isn’t just for pandemic times.

Teledentistry can be very useful for people who are busy and struggle to find time to get into the office. If they have a question or want to know more about a specific procedure, they can talk to the dentist on their own time, from anywhere, instead of having to find time to come into the office. Those who suffer from dental anxiety can also get an opinion or talk to their dentist to make themselves more comfortable.

The Virtual Dentistry Process

To start, you’ll schedule your virtual dentistry appointment like you would a normal one. You can call our office or schedule an appointment online and choose the virtual dentistry option. Our staff will take a look at availability and contact you to set up a time and date that works for both you and Dr. Ribitch. Before your appointment, you’ll get a link in your email that you’ll click on to be taken to your appointment when the time comes.

The link will take you to a virtual waiting room until Dr. Ribitch joins. You’ll have a video chat with him and will discuss any issues you may have. Many people use virtual appointments to figure out a plan for a smile makeover or other cosmetic treatment, for instance. When your appointment is over, Dr. Ribitch will talk to you about any next steps and will determine if you need to come into the office for further treatment.
